A woman who set out to adopt a single kitten ended up taking home a mama cat and her entire litter, unwilling to separate a family this close.

She was found outside, heavily pregnant and on her own, by a kind stranger who brought her to the Humane Society. Shortly after she arrived, the little tuxedo cat, soon named Sage, gave birth to four kittens. It was a hard start. One of the four didn’t survive. But Sage still had three babies counting on her, and she gave everything she had to them.

Once a mandatory stray hold was lifted, Sage and her surviving kittens entered foster care through Kane’s k9s in San Diego, California. Their foster, Asa, picked up the whole family when the babies were still less than a week old.

Looking at Sage now, stretched out on the floor, green eyes steady, one paw extended forward like she owns the place, it is hard to picture her as anything other than exactly where she belongs.

“Mama Sage is the sweetest little thing,” Asa shared with LoveMeow. The kittens were named after herbs to match their mama: Cilantro, Parsley, and Basil, three tabby babies who were identical enough in those early weeks to give anyone pause. Sage, apparently, never had trouble telling them apart.

Even in those first days, Sage was unbothered. She nursed her babies on her back in the carrier, looking up at whoever came to check on her with the calm expression of a cat who had decided everything was going to be fine.

In the safety of a foster home, with Sage doing the round-the-clock work of nursing and keeping watch, the Herbs hit every milestone right on schedule. They grew sturdier, bolder, and more curious by the week. And through all of it, one thing stayed constant: how tightly the four of them remained bonded. They tangled together in a heap to sleep, tumbled over each other to play, and never strayed far from mom.

Two of the three could usually be found propped against each other, eyes barely open, while the third sprawled flat on its back between them, completely asleep and entirely unconcerned with the world.

Sage made it look effortless. “In eleven years of fostering, I think they’ve been the easiest fosters to date,” Asa shared. “Sage has done such a wonderful job raising them, and I haven’t had to intervene at all.”

Week by week, the difference showed. What began as a pile of sleeping newborns tucked against their mother’s chest became three bright-eyed kittens sitting up on their own, looking out at the world with the kind of confidence that only comes from a steady, devoted mother.

When the family became available for adoption, that closeness changed everything.

A woman came looking to adopt a kitten or two, a perfectly ordinary, reasonable plan. But the moment she saw the Herb family together, saw how little space there was between them, she couldn’t picture pulling them apart. So she didn’t. She applied to adopt all four: Sage, Cilantro, Parsley, and Basil. The whole family.

It is an outcome that seldom happens. Litters are routinely split among different homes, and mama cats, having done the hardest work of raising healthy kittens, are too often passed over once their babies get scooped up. For all four to be chosen together, kept whole, is genuinely rare.

Sage seemed unfazed by any of it. While Cilantro, Parsley, and Basil nursed, she watched the camera with the same steady patience she had brought to everything else.

The news had to stay quiet for a few weeks while the adoption was being finalized. All four cats were spayed and neutered, and within days, they were set to be picked up by their new mom. Because Asa was traveling and didn’t want to bounce the family around unnecessarily, she said her goodbyes a little early.

“I am just beyond ecstatic knowing they’ll get to grow up together and have each other forever,” she shared with the LoveMeow team.

By the time Cilantro, Parsley, and Basil had grown into the cats sitting side by side on that cat tree, tabby markings crisp, ears tall, each one looking off in a slightly different direction as if already staking out their own corner of the world, Sage had given them everything they needed.

All four of them are gaining weight consistently, no unplanned vet visits, eight weeks without a single crisis. That is what she gave them.
